BA in English Literature, Kenyon College, 1986
MA in Education, Bank Street College of Education, 1990
I teach Design Technology at the Dwight School in New York City.
I have taught for more than 25 years at independent schools, where I have been a core teacher, technology and computer science teacher, and technology integrator working with elementary, middle, and upper school students and teachers. I have taught programming, robotics, electronics, 3D modeling, and 3D printing; 2D modeling for laser cutting and vinyl cutting projects; and design technology to middle school and high school students.
I have also taught robotics and computer programming at numerous adult and student workshops and conferences.
In the past few years, I have been developing a maker lab environment and exploring an approach to robotics that is different from the Lego Mindstorms model. My students have been working with Arduino microcontrollers, soldering irons, and other electronics and workshop tools to build circuits, sensors, and Arduino shields to engineer and program robots from the ground up. I have also integrated 3D modeling software and 3D printing into my robotics classes, electronics clubs, and into other subject areas such as humanities and science.
For fun, I like to play tennis, play guitar and piano, write songs and stories, practice yoga and play Magic: The Gathering with my son.
